The bill would give the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), among other regulatory responsibilities, the authority to order recalls if a company fails to act on its own, would increase the frequency of inspections of high-risk food processing facilities and force companies to recall tainted food. The need to trace food ingredients and instigate recalls was made even more critical by the recent widespread Salmonella outbreaks in peanuts, eggs and produce.
